Mena Middle school ran it's first test of our new voice call system today... The message was regarding today's parent teacher conference... If you received this call and failed to answer you may have thought the school was calling in regard to your student or some type of emergency... This was not the case... Parent's can help eliminate any confusion by setting up your voice mail or by clearing out your voice mail messages if it is full... The plan is for this to become a new tool to notify parents about events that effect you and our students...

MMS Announcements for Wednesday, April 10th Teachers, today I am doing these announcements from a different phone. Please email me and let me know if you still have the same intercom issues with these announcements. If you were absent yesterday, there are extra order forms for Spring pictures in the office. Remember, you are not required to have your picture taken, it is voluntary. Reminder: If you are interested in the co-ed volleyball tournament, visit the Bearcat Foundation web page for the sign up form. From Mr. Goodnight: Any current 7th or 8th grade student that is interested in showing livestock for FFA can go by his room in the next couple of days to sign up. From FBC: Today’s church van may not arrive today until 3:45. From Mrs. Rose: BADD members please plan to wear your shirts on Friday. You will be participating with Mayor Smith's signing of the Alcohol Awareness Month Proclamation. You will also meet during Achieve for a campus clean up. We have had several recent issues with students listening to loud music – sometimes inappropriate music – on the bus. If you want to listen to music on the bus, you must wear earbuds. If you are written up for this, it could be a double violation (bus violation / phone violation). Several students have been roaming the hallways before school. Once you arrive at school you are only allowed to go to the cafeteria or outside. You can go to the library to read or study, with permission from Mrs. Brooks. Some of you have noticed that we are in that time of the year where wasps and bees are starting to become active. Be on the lookout for them and leave them alone. Reminders: Deadline to sign up for the Talent Show is next Tuesday. 7th grade GT will be meeting today after these announcements and 8th grade tomorrow. Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.—Maya Angelou This sums up the wave that is moving across Arkansas in regards to The Right To Read Act 1063 requiring Arkansas educators to achieve levels of proficiency and awareness in the knowledge and practices of the science of reading. Mena School District Dyslexia Coordinator, Vicky Maye shares that our school is committed to making preventative curriculum changes with whole group and small group instruction to put the science of reading in motion to close the gap in literacy achievement for our struggling readers. We are teaming with Winsor Learning’s Sonday System which is an Orton Gillingham Reading Intervention System that provides multi sensory tools and training to help equip our educators to become master multi sensory instructors who can use daily instruction to wire and train our students’ brains to successfully read. Our administration has been willing to go above and beyond to make the much needed changes to move forward with closing the literacy gap in our school. I’ve worked closely with our federal coordinator, Paulette Sherrer; building principals Jimma Holder, Tamara Smart, and Clifton Sherrer, our LEA-Laura Bunch for special education and our teachers to get these changes in motion. It’s got to be a team approach with everybody being a stakeholder and having ownership in making the very most of our investments in our students! Pictured is Winsor’s Educational Consultant, Kristen Koeller leading this initiative with Mena teachers representing K-8th regular education and special education teachers and dyslexia paraprofessionals. Koeller will provide continuous support with this endeavor. Maye shares that it’s important to keep Sally Shaywitz’s words in mind as our mission, “.....the struggling reader needs someone who will not only believe in him but will translate that belief into positive action....and then actively and relentlessly work to ensure that he receives what he needs.”
