Security Awareness Alert - December December is upon us and the holidays are here! This time is well known for good food, spending time with loved ones, and snazzy gifts. Did you know that cybercriminals love Christmas too? Seriously, it really is their favorite season. During the holidays we're all shopping on new sites, receiving all kinds of promotional emails, and seeing advertisements pop-up everywhere we look online. For cybercriminals, this creates the perfect environment to take advantage of regular folks like us. I don't know about you, but a cyberattack is a present that is best left unwrapped! Take 3 minutes this holiday season to protect yourself and your crew. You'll be smarter and safer in minutes! https://adesandbox.arkansas.gov/iframe...

Mena bus drivers have reported an increase in the number of vehicles who are passing busses while red lights are flashing. Starting this school year, Arkansas law now requires drivers to stop at least 30 feet behind a stopped school bus. This law applies to drivers in all directions. It applies to roads, streets or highways open to the general public. A driver who breaks the law can be found guilty of a misdemeanor. The proscribed punishments are a fine of $250 to $1,000 and/or up to 90 days in jail. Follow this link to read Act 264 https://www.arkleg.state.ar.us/Acts/FTPDocument...

National School Bus Safety Week was the result of a letter-writing campaign to President Nixon in 1969. Founded by Dick Fischer, a former school district transportation director in California, the first NSBSW was held in 1970. In 1975, the National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT) was founded. The NAPT, along with the National School Transportation Association (NSTA) and National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPT), hosts National Bus Safety Week each year.

During the 2nd full week in October, National School Lunch Week shines the spotlight on the programs and nutritious food served up every day throughout the school year. Many cafeteria staff often know a child’s eating habits as well as a parent does. They often know each child by name. At the Mena Public Schools we appreciate our friends at Aramark for feeding our students a delicious & nutritious meal every school day !

In this challenging and pandemic year, I believe we have seen just how important the arts are in our world. Music is a big part of how we survive in difficulty, celebrate in good times, bond with others, and create memories. Music can be our escape or how we connect with our own emotions. I am thankful that theatre incorporates music in so many ways. Students need to see how music defines a scene, a character, a feeling, or changes the atmosphere in a production. -JESSICA KROPP-

The Mena School Board conducted their December meeting on Tuesday night at the Administration Building. As usual the meeting began with the Superintendent's Report. Mr. Benny Weston updated the board on a number of education related issues that will be a part of the Arkansas Legislative Session. The session begins on January 11th, 2021. Weston also congratulated the band, volleyball, football, cross country & golf teams on a successful fall. He also thanked the district patrons for paying attention to the guidelines so that those seasons could be completed. Flex Friday was next on the agenda. As voted on earlier these flex days will come to an end this week. The process of evaluating the success of this modification is underway. The district is surveying staff & monitoring student success before determining any future modification to the school calendar. Any change will have to be presented to the board for approval. Antigen Rapid Test have been made available to the Mena School District. When staff members return from the winter break they will have the opportunity to receive the test for the Covid Virus. The test will be available in all buildings on a weekly basis & is completely voluntary. The board then approved the stipends list for the year & also the financial report. Finally under personnel. Bethany Meadors & Breanna Peters have been serving as long term substitute teachers. The board approved the two being placed under contract for the second semester only at Louise Durham Elementary & Holly Harshman Elementary. These contracts are being funded by Title One funds carried over from last year.

We will be sending the meals home on Thursday, until further notice, as we have been doing. The food will be handed out on the bus when your student gets off. As part of a coordinated response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) in partnership with the Office for Education Policy (OEP) at the University of Arkansas has developed a Parent/Guardian Survey for soliciting family input on what is working now and what may be considered for the future. We encourage you to share the survey link with your families and ask them to complete the survey before November 20th. A Spanish version of the survey is available here. The survey seeks to involve families in an organized, ongoing and timely way in planning, review, and improvement. The survey will provide feedback regarding: * family concerns * how families are making decisions * family awareness of options and resources available * family considerations for the future The intention of this survey is not to identify individual school or district responses, but rather to establish an understanding of the state as a whole. The information will be aggregated by region only; therefore, families will be asked to identify the region of the state in which they live in order to understand the distribution of the survey without specifically identifying any district or school by name. OEP will be sharing results at the December State Board meeting. Follow this link to the Survey:https://uark.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6X7aRF3ErNNXFel... The Flex Friday option for students will continue through the Christmas break & will be reevaluated before the 2nd semester begins. There were two action items that were a part of the Superintendent's Report. One being a request by the Future Farmers of America chapter to proceed with the establishment of a shooting sport program, That request was approved. The other was a proposal to give all full time Mena Public School employees a $750.00 bonus. That proposal was approved by the board & the bonus will be issued at the same time as the December payroll. Finally the board approved the financial report & adjourned for the evening. .

The Mena Public Schools would like to take this opportunity to put our patrons at ease & address recent rumors concerning Covid-19. We are aware of an increase of cases in the area. As of November 10th there are 7 positive cases involving staff & students. At this time there are no plans to close for an extended period of time unless we do not have enough adults to safely monitor students. If and when we reach that point, we will make the public aware through our normal communication methods. Arkansas Department of Education Secretary Johnny Key addressed such rumors on Tuesday as a part of Governor Asa Hutchinson’s daily Covid-19 Update. Key said “There is a rumor that the state might call off on-site instruction between Thanksgiving and the Christmas break. There is not a plan to do that, and it has not been suggested to the Governor.” You may check the ACHI School District Geographic Boundary Level Maps to see the trends for new positive COVID-19 cases for school districts. Dear Parents/Guardians, Our funding for next year is based on the number of meals that we serve this year and the number of free/reduced applications we receive. Which can be accessed on the Mena school website, under food service information. In an effort to maintain our funding for school year 21-22, Mena Public Schools will be providing meals for students participating in Flex Fridays, blended learning, and PCVA. Blended and PCVA students can request a week's worth of meals by accessing the link each week on the school website under food service information or there is a link shared on Facebook each week. Flex Friday meals will be sent home with students on Thursday afternoon with students who will not be attending in-person classes on Friday. In order to meet USDA meal pattern requirements, some items may need to be refrigerated as soon as your child arrives home. Please check their meal bags for these. There will be a form posted on the Mena Schools website, and the school's Facebook pages. We would appreciate you filling this out if you plan for your child to learn from home on Fridays. If in the future you decide not to participate you may opt-out by contacting Susan Bodey, Aramark food service director @ 479-234-1161, or Amy Bartow, Mena schools food service director @ 479-216-0060. Thank You for your support during these trying times! Susan Bodey Follow the link to the Flex Friday Meal Order Form. https://docs.google.com/.../1FAIpQLSd4vRrLvAy.../viewform...

The Mena School Board met for their October meeting on Tuesday the 20th in the Mena High School Library. It was a brief meeting but included significant topics on the agenda. The board began by approving the closing documents on a bond issue. The closing date is November 5th, 2020. This will reduce the current interest rate from 4% to a new rate of 2.55%. This change will save the district $250,000 per year for the first four years and $2.2 million over the life of the bond. Superintendent Benny Weston reported that a part of the new facility near Holly Harshman Elementary will carry a Bearcat theme. The facility is owned by the Rich Mountain Nursing & Rehabilitation Center & they will be naming one of the homes Bearcat House & another the Ladycat House. Next on the agenda was discussion on adding “Flex Friday” to the district’s Ready for Learning Plan. The addition was approved & the first Flex Friday will be October 30th. A video explaining this adjustment will be released on Mena Public School’s social media & website. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lee Smith reported to the board that this year’s Annual Report to the Public will be virtual & available to patrons of the district online. The board was then made aware of upcoming training dates available to them & the meeting was adjourned.

To: All ESS Staff serving Mena School District From: Benny Weston Re: Your Safety We want to assure our substitute teachers that Mena Public Schools is making sincere efforts to reduce everyone’s risk of exposure to COVID-19. Although we cannot guarantee that exposure will not happen, we are doing these things to maintain a safe environment: 1. Reducing the interactions between teachers and other students not in their classrooms through scheduling and student pods. 2. Requiring masks to be worn by all people in the buildings ages 10 and older. 3. Reducing exchange of materials such as food trays and books. 4. Disinfecting surfaces daily and providing hand sanitizing in every room throughout the district. 5. Maintaining social distancing protocols in classrooms and commons areas when possible and maintaining students pods when it is not. 6. Not allowing large assemblies. 7. Restricting outside guests from entering the buildings to maintain a controlled environment. 8. Quarantining infected individuals and their close contacts using Arkansas Department of Health standards, which are strictly adhered to. We feel that our school buildings are as safe as any other facility which hosts large numbers of people and would invite all substitute teachers to return to the classrooms. Our cases at Mena Public Schools have been very few and we feel that our attention to the standards and protocols are why we have been successful at controlling the spread of COVID-19.

The Mena School Board met for their September meeting on Tuesday evening in the Mena High School Library. The board unanimously approved the 2020—2021 operating budget. Including federal programs, VI-B & special education. They also unanimously approved the 2020-2021 Standards of Accreditation, the Polk County Virtual Academy Charter School Statement of Assurance as well as Resolution Act 1120. Superintendent Benny Weston then made the board aware of a bond sale which will take place in the near future. These bonds will receive an improved rate which will save the district money over the life of the bond. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lee Smith then recommended to the board that they accept a bid from Velocity Fusion for a new phone system for the district & new intercom system on three campuses. The cost to the district will be just over $119,000. The board voted to accept that bid. Graduation 2021 was next on the agenda & after a brief discussion a date of Saturday, May 22nd was approved. Each school board member is required to take 6 hours of training this year & they were made aware of 9 hours of training being made available in the month of October that they can take advantage of. The board quickly approved the financial reports. Under personnel. The resignation of Jessica Smith, from her position as Family & Consumer Science teacher, was accepted & will become effective September 30th. They then approved the transfer of Lauren Frost to that position from her current position as a secretary at MHS effective October 1st. Finally the board approved the drafting of a letter, to the faculty & staff at Mena Public Schools, expressing their deepest gratitude for the good job they have done under difficult circumstances this school year.

A message to all parents from our nursing staff. We want your child(ren) to be able to fully participate in school safely and stay healthy. Here are a few guidelines that we ask you to follow before sending your child to school: Please check your child's temperature each morning. Keep your child home if they have a fever of 100 F or higher. You should also keep your child home if they have other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, or persistent coughing. All students 10 years and older must wear a cloth face covering on our campuses and practice social distancing whenever possible. If you know your child needs immunizations at this time, please make an appointment with their Primary Care Provider or the Health Department as soon as possible. We strongly encourage everyone who can to get the flu shot this year.Opportunities for your child to receive a flu shot at school will be announced at a later date. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's health at school please contact the school nurse. We look forward to getting this school year started! See Less

The Mena School Board conducted their August meeting on Tuesday Evening in the Mena High School Library. The meeting began with the approval of the minutes from the July meeting & a brief Superintendents Report. In new business the board approved the 2019/2020 inventory list. Assistant Superintendent Lee Smith spoke on changes in the District Policies Manual. A majority of the changes revolved around recently released changes in Title IX requirements. The changes were accepted. Administrators from LDE, HHE, MMS, MHS & PCVA then spoke on changes in the handbook as well as the reentry plan at each campus. All were minor & mostly related to Covid 19. The changes & re-entry plans were unanimously approved. Little to no changes have been made to the extracurricular/athletic handbook, coaches handbook & athletic administration guidebook. The few changes had to do with Covid policies & all were approved. Mr. Shane Torix then presented point of contact information to the board. He updated them on Covid policies & the reporting procedure. No action was required. Mr. Danny Minton then gave an update on projects around the district of which Included the installation of new equipment in the kitchen at HHE, a walk in cooler at MMS, new track fencing at Bearcat Stadium and painting of faded red awnings at the high school. Minton also happily reported that the district has passed all inspections leading up to the school year. The board approved a year end transfer of $362,767.22 to the building fund. These funds were designated for projects in 19- 20. These funds will be transferred back as those projects are completed. Personnel was the final item on the agenda. The board accepted the retirement of Tammy Taylor & the resignation of Terry Dino Cabello as well as Julie Gordon. The board also approved the hiring of Heather Catlett for MHS History & Kristi Cogburn for MHS/MMS Choir. The next meeting of the Mena School Board will be held on Tuesday, September 22nd

The Mena School Board gathered for their regular July meeting on Tuesday evening at Mena Middle School. The meeting began with the Superintendent’s Report. Mr Benny Weston informed the board that they may be seeing some large purchases in the financial report & that the district will be reimbursed with CARES Act Funding on those purchases at a later date. Weston then asked the board for input on whether or not exchange students should be accepted in 20/21. This is normally an administrative decision. After a brief discussion all board members agreed that the district would accept exchange students as usual. A quick mention was made of the state & local bus training which was held at the MHS Performing Arts Center on Tuesday. Also a part of the Superintendent’s Report was the Bearcats Ready for Learning Plan which was presented by Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lee Smith. That led to discussion on the use of mask by students in the coming school year. The board agreed that the district will adhere to the Governors order & adjust as guidance is given. In new business Mena Middle School Principal Mr. Clif Sherrer presented the adjusted School Calendar for 20/21. It was approved unanimously & the new calendar will be posted on social media & the Mena Schools Website soon. Mena Mayor Seth Smith has requested a partnership with the district on a project to extend the overlay on Geyer Drive next to Holly Harshman Elementary. The board gave Weston permission to negotiate an agreement with the City of Mena. A bid was accepted & approved from Polk County Farm Bureau in the amount of $22,698 on insurance for all the district buses & vehicles. The board approved the annual $200 petty cash allotment for each campus in the district & the annual Statement of Assurances passed with no discussion. District Maintenance Supervisor Danny Minton gave an update on numerous projects. He also approached the board with two bids to paint the red portions of MHS. The low bid of $22,000 by a Mena company was approved. Minton also stated that sneeze guards for each office & some other locations have been ordered & a needs assessment is underway for classrooms. A total of 20 bottle filling stations have been ordered & 20 hand sanitizing stations have been built. The financial reports were approved, the amended adjusted salary schedule proposed at the June meeting was approved & the board voted to allow principals to make changes to student policies as guidance from the state is delivered. Finally in personnel matters the resignation of Josh Bradford was accepted & the hiring of Tyler Huntington as MMS Band Director was approved. Sam Varner was also put on contract as a bus driver…

A thank you to MPS & Aramark employees from an anonymous patron. Thank you and all that help make it possible for the food boxes. We appreciate it so much. It has eased some stress during this time. The stress of having to purchase enough food to feed our constantly hungry growing children during a time where most are out of work. The stress of having to go to public places like the grocery store and try and shop cheaply, quickly, and stay healthy. My children who are missing going to school were very excited to see the items they are use to at school. They even pretended they were back at school with our plates that look similar to school trays. Grabbing their milks first and walking around the kitchen as it was the lunch line. Thank you so much again! We are lucky and grateful to have such a kind and helpful school and community. - A grateful family Week 2 meals will be delivered on Monday April 6th. Commissioner Johnny Key announced today that Arkansas will be seeking the waiver to cancel the Spring State ACT Aspire Testing as well as the K-2 Assessment for this year, Here is the official statement! Due to the extraordinary circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting school closures, states have been provided flexibility regarding the assessment and accountability requirements under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Given the widespread, extended school closures, and the interruption in school operations and on-site classroom education, Arkansas will cancel administration of state testing for the spring of 2020. This includes the Act Aspire and the K-2 assessments. Arkansas will participate in the U.S. Department of Education’s expedited waiver process and will be seeking broad flexibility from both assessment and accountability provisions.

The Mena School District is working with the Division of Elementary & Secondary Education to implement a framework developed by Marzano Research called High Reliability Schools. As part of this process we are collecting feedback from parents, staff, and administrators through an online survey administered by the Hanover Research firm. Survey responses will be anonymous and data will only be reported as a group. Surveys are available starting Tuesday, January 28th and closing Friday, February 14th. You will see two questions in this survey that ask whether you are a European Union citizen or are currently located in the European Union (EU). Hanover Research is required to ask these questions to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation, a new EU policy that gives citizens and others traveling in the EU greater control over their personal data. The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete. To begin, please click the following link: https://bit.ly/2TPnfjN We appreciate your participation and thank you for your time. The Mena School Board held their January meeting on Tuesday Night at the Administration Building . The board went into executive session immediately to discuss the renewal of Benny Weston's contract as Superintendent. When the executive session ended the board voted unanimously to add an additional year to Weston's contract. Danny Minton addressed the board on the HVAC Scheduled Maintenance Agreement. The board renewed the agreement for Mena High School, including the addition of the safe room systems, at a cost of $14,850.00. The board also approved the addition of an agreement for Louise Durham Elementary at a cost of $4,292.00. Minton also gave an update on the district facilities which included information on damage caused by a recent lightning strike. The strike took place on a light pole at the baseball field & not only caused damage there but also to phones, cameras, HVAC & more. A complete damage assessment is underway & may continue for some time before all damage is discovered. Attention then turned to the Mid Year Review in which Weston was pleased to report that the district had exhausted 47% of the budget for the year. Weston then updated each member of the board on the requirements of Act 589 the School Board Member Training Report in which all board members had met or exceeded the required number of hours. The Board moved on to the financial report which was approved. The Annual School Board Liability Insurance & General Liability Coverage premium was briefly discussed before the being approved at a cost of $8783.00. Finally there were a pair of personnel issues. The board accepted the resignation of Hope Cannon who is a para pro at MMS & also they also approved the move of bus driver Gwen Andrews from a "C" to a "B" route.

NOVEMBER SCHOOL BOARD MEETING! The Mena School Board met for the regular November meeting on Tuesday evening. The board began by approving the minutes from the September & October meeting. They quickly moved to passing a disclosure statement for board member Kyle Cannon who is also an employee of the Union Bank of Mena. A proposal was made to change the district employees vision plan. Mena Insurance currently holds the contract through Superior Vision. The new plan offered by Mena Insurance would be through Blue Cross & Blue Shield at a lower cost to employees & an increase in benefits. The change was passed by the board & will go into effect February 1, 2020. Next was the approval of the financial reports for September & October. Resignations were accepted by the board including Carol Sproles, Michaela VanPelt, David Goodner, & Howard Elliot. The board approved an addendum to the contract of Cheryl Goodner, additional hours to Keri Duer, and a transfer of duties for Alicia Moody. Superintendent Benny Weston presented a plan to restructure current Mena School District custodial employees & outsource the needed evening janitorial shifts. The board approved accepting a bid from SG360 for only the evening janotorial shifts at Louise Durham Elementary & Holly Harshman Elementary.

The Mena School Board held their October meeting Tuesday evening at the district administration building. The lack of a quorum prevented the board from voting on items on the agenda & those were postponed until the November meeting. Mr. Benny Weston began the meeting with the superintendent's report. He mentioned that several district leaders, including himself, recently had a meeting with the state regarding minimum wage & new teacher pay requirements. The district now has specific guidelines to follow & Weston felt positive the district is in good shape regarding those changes. Weston also stated that the district has met with two phone companies & has a third scheduled to discuss a new phone system on each campus. Investigation also continues into the viability of a solar energy system & two solar companies have weighed in so far. The bulk of the meeting was taken up by the ESSA Report which was recently released by the Arkansas Department of Education. The Principal from each campus gave a report on their score & where they thought improvements could be made. Mr. Danny Minton gave an update on projects. The district recently completed an environmental safety & also the 3 year asbestos inspection. The district passed both & met state regulations. The floors at Jim Rackley & the Union Bank Center are scheduled to be resurfaced before the end of October. Construction on a visitors side press box at Bearcat Stadium should begin in two weeks. Menton gave an update on repair to a damaged section of the floor in the high school safe room & a quote of $7995.00 has been received on the addition of more handrails at the Union Bank Center. Finally the board was told of the resignation of Carol Sproles from the MMS Staff.

The Mena School Board conducted their annual Report to the Public meeting on Tuesday night. The evening began with a Facilities Meeting which included a one hour update on facilities, improvements & the five year plan. In total the district buildings include 430,000 square feet with a replacement cost of 71 million dollars. Improvements over the past year were reviewed as well as those on the horizon & additions to the five year plan. That was followed by the annual Report the the Public Meeting. Mr. Benny Weston began on the district financial status. The end of year balance was $4,185,544.06 which is set aside for emergencies & potential shortfalls. Weston went on to state that the district currently employs 229 people & that 67% of the districts students qualify for free or reduced meals. Paulette Sherrer spoke briefly on curriculum & testing. She shared a graph with those in attendance which show the students in the district are meeting or exceeding the national average. Louise Durham Principal Jimma Holder says that enrollment in kindergarten has increased to 170 students & that the number of students testing proficient & exceeding have increased. Principal Tamara Smart from Holly Harshman Elementary noted a gain in ACT Aspire scores in each grade. Mena Middle School Principal Cliff Sherrer reported a total of 400 students over the three grades. He is excited about the upcoming student council elections as MMS has not had a student council for a number of years. Sherrer also added that many improvements have been added to the science curriculum. 526 students are currently enrolled at Mena High School & Principal David Maxwell told the board that is an increase of 32 students. In addition he reported that students performed well above the state average on the Aspire testing & that he is planning to improve those scores even more. Maxwell also ran down a long list of concurrent courses which have been added at Mena High School. It was at this point in the meeting that a number of VIP's interrupted the meeting to award Superintendent Benny Weston with an award as the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators. (see photos & details on our social media & website) Mrs. Bridget Buckley, MHS Assistant Principal & PCVA Director, reported an enrollment of twenty nine in the Polk County Virtual Academy & a positive response to a change in curriculum. Finally Mrs. Paulette Sherrer announced an increase in federal funding & an increase of fifteen students to the schools gifted & talented program. After a short break the September School Board meeting was conducted. It was a very brief meeting that included an executive session. Afterwards the board approved a one time bonus of $1,000.00 for Mr. Weston in recognition of his well-deserved accomplishment of Arkansas 2020 Superintendent of the Year. The School Board meets on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Administration Building.

Patriot Day is an annual observance on September 11 to remember those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001. Many Americans refer to Patriot Day as 9/11 or September 11. Patriot Day is not a public holiday. Businesses have normal opening hours. Patriot Day remembers those who lost their lives during the 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. On the direction of the President, the flag of the United States of America should be displayed on the homes of Americans, the White House and all United States government buildings in the whole world. The flag should be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect to those who died on September 11, 2001. Many people observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM (Eastern Daylight Time). This marks the time that the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. Some communities, particularly in the areas directly affected by the attacks, hold special church services or prayer meetings. People who personally experienced the events in 2001 or lost loved ones in them, may lay flowers or visit memorials. Patriot Day is not a federal holiday and schools and businesses do not close. Public transit systems run on their regular schedules. Some people and organizations may take some time out to hold prayers for the victims of the attacks, but these do not usually affect public life for more than a few minutes. On September 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked. The hijackers then deliberately flew three of the planes into two important buildings, the Pentagon in Washington DC and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. The fourth crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The loss of life and damage that these hijackings caused form the biggest act of terrorism ever on United States soil. Nearly 3000 people died in the attacks.

Children & hydration Children are at a greater risk of dehydration than adults. This is because in relation to their size, children have a larger proportion of their skin available to lose sweat and be exposed to heat. Additionally, children don’t always recognize that they’re thirsty, and if they’re not encouraged and reminded may forget to drink. Luckily, there are a few ways to tell if your child is hydrated. How do I know if my child is hydrated? Frequent bathroom breaks or wet nappies are the easiest way to tell if your child is hydrated. You can also look out for these common symptoms of dehydration: Headaches Poor concentration Thirst Cracked lips Dry mouth Constipation Lethargy Dark urine How much water does my child need? The amount your child needs will vary depending on their age, size and level of activity. For children under 8 years of age, at least 4-6 glasses of water is recommended. For children older than 8 years of age a minimum of 6-8 glasses is recommended. If your child is playing sports or is very active they will need extra fluid, see our section on hydration for active kids. Kids will also need more fluid on hot days or when unwell. Tips to help your kids stay hydrated! Pack a water bottle for school and when you go out. Try a frozen water bottle in summer. Encourage your child to drink water before, after and during physical activity Always offer water with meals and snacks Encourage your child to drink water, even if they don’t like it! Tips for kids who don’t like water Try adding slices of fruits such as lemon or orange to water, for variety and flavour. Let your kids choose their own drink bottle or serve water in colourful glasses or jugs. Be a role model! Make a point of drinking water with your kids. Experiment with temperature; try having a jug of water in the fridge, adding ice-cubes, or even warm water in winter. Water is the best choice to keep your kids hydrated throughout the day. Water contains no extra energy and can quench your thirst. Other fluids such as milk, juice and sweetened drinks can also contribute to your child’s fluid intake. For more information on drink choices for your kids, check out the Drinks section of our website.

It is that time of year when we focus our efforts on securing Host Families for these Exchange Students who will be arriving in August. So, if you’ve ever considered hosting an international student, now would be a good time. Educatius International Host Families come in many different shapes and sizes - young couples with small children, single persons, one parent families, empty nesters, etc. The one characteristic all host families share is a big heart with a lot of love to offer a new family member! As a Host Families you will receive a $400 monthly stipend/student to help offset the expense of having a teenager in your home. All that we ask of our Host Families is that you provide a bedroom, meals, love and guidance and a place to study. You are not alone during this opportunity. It is my responsibility is to support the student, host family and school throughout the duration of the academic school year. We also have 24/7 national support. Our students come with their own insurance and spending money for; school lunches and school fees, personal items and activities they wish to be involved with. This is a wonderful opportunity to share Arkansas and the United States with a young person while you and your family learn about the student’s culture/country as well. The June Meeting of the Mena School Board was held at the Administration building on Tuesday night.... The board voted to approve KYLE CANNON as it's representative to the Arkansas School Board Association. The board also voted on it's annual restructuring. TODD AYNES will serve as President in 19/20. KYLE CANNON will serve as Vice President & EDD PUCKETT as Secretary. A transfer of $300,000.00 was approved from the operating fund to the building fund. This transfer will bring the district into compliance with ACT 1105 which obligates the district to lower it's legal balance to meet the June 30th state required legal balance of 20% of net revenues. The board approved the solicitation of bids on long term CD rates for $1 million currently in the disaster relief fund. These funds are currently in short term CD's to make them available should funds have been needed for the recently completed Louise Durham construction. Building & property insurance was renewed thru the ASBA Risk Management Program with an $18,735.38 increase. The increase was mainly due to the new construction at LDE. Rates for the Supplemental Student Accidental Insurance Policy remain unchanged at $33,868.00. The policy was renewed. DANNY MINTON gave a report to the board on construction & summer upgrades. At LDE work on the floors, painting & the playground continues. At HHE new LED lights have been installed & a new wall has been constructed for better access to storage. At MMS new LED lights have been installed in Jim Rackley Gymnasium. A sidewalk connecting the high school & middle school, near the ag building, has been completed. Striping on the front parking lot have been repainted & sheet rock repair has been completed at the MMS gym. At MHS the boilers have been serviced. The #'s on the main parking lot have been painted & a concrete access ramp has been poured at the field house. Several personnel changes were made. The board accepted the resignation of Tim Harper, Amanda Harper, Steve Breedlove, David Hampton, Aaron Pennington, Macklin Chermack,Melody Rowe, Thomas Powell, Hannah Powell & Lauren Quillin. Also approved was the transfer of Bridget Buckley to the position of Mena High School Assistant Principal & the hiring of Craig Bentley as Head Sr. High Football coach, Lauren Frost as High School Secretary & Sarah Bentley as 1st grade teacher
