Due to the logistics of the bus routes, we are sorry to have to cancel the announcement made at the beginning of the week with Flex Friday meals. We will be sending the meals home on Thursday, until further notice, as we have been doing. The food will be handed out on the bus when your student gets off. Or given to car riders before they are dismissed for the day. We sincerely apologize for any confusion this has caused and look forward to providing your children with meals for Flex Friday.

As part of a coordinated response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) in partnership with the Office for Education Policy (OEP) at the University of Arkansas has developed a Parent/Guardian Survey for soliciting family input on what is working now and what may be considered for the future. We encourage you to share the survey link with your families and ask them to complete the survey before November 20th. A Spanish version of the survey is available here. The survey seeks to involve families in an organized, ongoing and timely way in planning, review, and improvement. The survey will provide feedback regarding: * family concerns * how families are making decisions * family awareness of options and resources available * family considerations for the future The intention of this survey is not to identify individual school or district responses, but rather to establish an understanding of the state as a whole. The information will be aggregated by region only; therefore, families will be asked to identify the region of the state in which they live in order to understand the distribution of the survey without specifically identifying any district or school by name. OEP will be sharing results at the December State Board meeting. Follow this link to the Survey:https://uark.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6X7aRF3ErNNXFel... The Mena School Board met for their November meeting on Tuesday via Zoom. There was a short agenda & the meeting was brief, The meeting began with the Superintendent's Report. Mr. Benny Weston started by updating the board on the Covid-19 cases & quarantine situation in the district & stated that they have been able to isolate those cases. Next Weston was happy to report that the response to Flex Friday has been very positive. A total of 602 students attended class on the first Flex Friday, 683 on the second & 593 on the third. The Flex Friday option for students will continue through the Christmas break & will be reevaluated before the 2nd semester begins. There were two action items that were a part of the Superintendent's Report. One being a request by the Future Farmers of America chapter to proceed with the establishment of a shooting sport program, That request was approved. The other was a proposal to give all full time Mena Public School employees a $750.00 bonus. That proposal was approved by the board & the bonus will be issued at the same time as the December payroll. Finally the board approved the financial report & adjourned for the evening. .

The Mena School Board met for their October meeting on Tuesday the 20th in the Mena High School Library. It was a brief meeting but included significant topics on the agenda. The board began by approving the closing documents on a bond issue. The closing date is November 5th, 2020. This will reduce the current interest rate from 4% to a new rate of 2.55%. This change will save the district $250,000 per year for the first four years and $2.2 million over the life of the bond. Superintendent Benny Weston reported that a part of the new facility near Holly Harshman Elementary will carry a Bearcat theme. The facility is owned by the Rich Mountain Nursing & Rehabilitation Center & they will be naming one of the homes Bearcat House & another the Ladycat House. Next on the agenda was discussion on adding “Flex Friday” to the district’s Ready for Learning Plan. The addition was approved & the first Flex Friday will be October 30th. A video explaining this adjustment will be released on Mena Public School’s social media & website. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lee Smith reported to the board that this year’s Annual Report to the Public will be virtual & available to patrons of the district online. The board was then made aware of upcoming training dates available to them & the meeting was adjourned.

The Mena School Board gathered for their regular July meeting on Tuesday evening at Mena Middle School. The meeting began with the Superintendent’s Report. Mr Benny Weston informed the board that they may be seeing some large purchases in the financial report & that the district will be reimbursed with CARES Act Funding on those purchases at a later date. Weston then asked the board for input on whether or not exchange students should be accepted in 20/21. This is normally an administrative decision. After a brief discussion all board members agreed that the district would accept exchange students as usual. A quick mention was made of the state & local bus training which was held at the MHS Performing Arts Center on Tuesday. Also a part of the Superintendent’s Report was the Bearcats Ready for Learning Plan which was presented by Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lee Smith. That led to discussion on the use of mask by students in the coming school year. The board agreed that the district will adhere to the Governors order & adjust as guidance is given. In new business Mena Middle School Principal Mr. Clif Sherrer presented the adjusted School Calendar for 20/21. It was approved unanimously & the new calendar will be posted on social media & the Mena Schools Website soon. Mena Mayor Seth Smith has requested a partnership with the district on a project to extend the overlay on Geyer Drive next to Holly Harshman Elementary. The board gave Weston permission to negotiate an agreement with the City of Mena. A bid was accepted & approved from Polk County Farm Bureau in the amount of $22,698 on insurance for all the district buses & vehicles. The board approved the annual $200 petty cash allotment for each campus in the district & the annual Statement of Assurances passed with no discussion. District Maintenance Supervisor Danny Minton gave an update on numerous projects. He also approached the board with two bids to paint the red portions of MHS. The low bid of $22,000 by a Mena company was approved. Minton also stated that sneeze guards for each office & some other locations have been ordered & a needs assessment is underway for classrooms. A total of 20 bottle filling stations have been ordered & 20 hand sanitizing stations have been built. The financial reports were approved, the amended adjusted salary schedule proposed at the June meeting was approved & the board voted to allow principals to make changes to student policies as guidance from the state is delivered. Finally in personnel matters the resignation of Josh Bradford was accepted & the hiring of Tyler Huntington as MMS Band Director was approved. Sam Varner was also put on contract as a bus driver…

The Mena School Board held their October meeting Tuesday evening at the district administration building. The lack of a quorum prevented the board from voting on items on the agenda & those were postponed until the November meeting. Mr. Benny Weston began the meeting with the superintendent's report. He mentioned that several district leaders, including himself, recently had a meeting with the state regarding minimum wage & new teacher pay requirements. The district now has specific guidelines to follow & Weston felt positive the district is in good shape regarding those changes. Weston also stated that the district has met with two phone companies & has a third scheduled to discuss a new phone system on each campus. Investigation also continues into the viability of a solar energy system & two solar companies have weighed in so far. The bulk of the meeting was taken up by the ESSA Report which was recently released by the Arkansas Department of Education. The Principal from each campus gave a report on their score & where they thought improvements could be made. Mr. Danny Minton gave an update on projects. The district recently completed an environmental safety & also the 3 year asbestos inspection. The district passed both & met state regulations. The floors at Jim Rackley & the Union Bank Center are scheduled to be resurfaced before the end of October. Construction on a visitors side press box at Bearcat Stadium should begin in two weeks. Menton gave an update on repair to a damaged section of the floor in the high school safe room & a quote of $7995.00 has been received on the addition of more handrails at the Union Bank Center. Children & hydration Children are at a greater risk of dehydration than adults. This is because in relation to their size, children have a larger proportion of their skin available to lose sweat and be exposed to heat. Additionally, children don’t always recognize that they’re thirsty, and if they’re not encouraged and reminded may forget to drink. Luckily, there are a few ways to tell if your child is hydrated. How do I know if my child is hydrated? Frequent bathroom breaks or wet nappies are the easiest way to tell if your child is hydrated. You can also look out for these common symptoms of dehydration: Headaches Poor concentration Thirst Cracked lips Dry mouth Constipation Lethargy Dark urine How much water does my child need? The amount your child needs will vary depending on their age, size and level of activity. For children under 8 years of age, at least 4-6 glasses of water is recommended. For children older than 8 years of age a minimum of 6-8 glasses is recommended. If your child is playing sports or is very active they will need extra fluid, see our section on hydration for active kids. Kids will also need more fluid on hot days or when unwell. Tips to help your kids stay hydrated! Pack a water bottle for school and when you go out. Try a frozen water bottle in summer. Encourage your child to drink water before, after and during physical activity Always offer water with meals and snacks Encourage your child to drink water, even if they don’t like it! Tips for kids who don’t like water Try adding slices of fruits such as lemon or orange to water, for variety and flavour. Let your kids choose their own drink bottle or serve water in colourful glasses or jugs. Be a role model! Make a point of drinking water with your kids. Experiment with temperature; try having a jug of water in the fridge, adding ice-cubes, or even warm water in winter. Water is the best choice to keep your kids hydrated throughout the day. Water contains no extra energy and can quench your thirst. Other fluids such as milk, juice and sweetened drinks can also contribute to your child’s fluid intake. For more information on drink choices for your kids, check out the Drinks section of our website.

The June Meeting of the Mena School Board was held at the Administration building on Tuesday night.... The board voted to approve KYLE CANNON as it's representative to the Arkansas School Board Association. The board also voted on it's annual restructuring. TODD AYNES will serve as President in 19/20. KYLE CANNON will serve as Vice President & EDD PUCKETT as Secretary. A transfer of $300,000.00 was approved from the operating fund to the building fund. This transfer will bring the district into compliance with ACT 1105 which obligates the district to lower it's legal balance to meet the June 30th state required legal balance of 20% of net revenues. The board approved the solicitation of bids on long term CD rates for $1 million currently in the disaster relief fund.
