The Mena School Board met for their November meeting on Tuesday via Zoom. There was a short agenda & the meeting was brief,
The meeting began with the Superintendent's Report. Mr. Benny Weston started by updating the board on the Covid-19 cases & quarantine situation in the district & stated that they have been able to isolate those cases.
Next Weston was happy to report that the response to Flex Friday has been very positive. A total of 602 students attended class on the first Flex Friday, 683 on the second & 593 on the third. The Flex Friday option for students will continue through the Christmas break & will be reevaluated before the 2nd semester begins.
There were two action items that were a part of the Superintendent's Report. One being a request by the Future Farmers of America chapter to proceed with the establishment of a shooting sport program, That request was approved.
The other was a proposal to give all full time Mena Public School employees a $750.00 bonus. That proposal was approved by the board & the bonus will be issued at the same time as the December payroll.
Finally the board approved the financial report & adjourned for the evening. .

Mena Public Schools Blended Spotlight!
Many new things have become a part of the learning process during the 20/21 school year. One of those is the arrival of “Blended Learning”. When a student & parent select this path it means that they will be learning at home with the option of returning to traditional school. It is structured to match the traditional school day to ease the transition back into the traditional classroom. It is not an easy road to take but some students actually thrive. Such is the case with Kyleigh Johnson.
Kyleigh is a senior at Mena High School & her mother, Dena Johnson, said “It has been a challenge because she has to prioritize her school work while also working 30 hours per week.” Johnson is an employee at the Mena Wal Mart Super Center & also on the honor roll at MHS.
Kyleigh is doing a great job taking advantage of all her opportunities as a Blended Bearcat !

A little about March of Dimes from their website:
80 years ago, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s personal struggle with polio led to the creation of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, better known as March of Dimes. They pioneered the vaccine research leading to the eradication of polio in the U.S. After that time they shifted their focus to some of the other health threats for moms and babies such as birth defects and other infant health problems.
Premature birth, which is considered birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy, and its complications are the #1 cause of death of babies in the United States. Babies who survive premature birth often have long-term health problems, including cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, chronic lung disease, blindness and hearing loss. In the United States, about 380,000 babies are born prematurely each year. The preterm birth rate is 9.8 percent in the United States. This means 1 in 10 babies is born too soon. Arkansas received an F on the March of Dimes report card for their preterm birth rate which is 11.9%. Each of those preterm births cost around 65 thousand dollars.
March of Dimes has many partners and supporters who participate in their campaigns, contribute research and donate to their funds. They have the BlanketChange campaign, the Send a Note of Hope and It Starts with Mom Live activities and most recently the Mom and Baby COVID-19 Intervention and Support Fund as well as many other ways to support and participate.
