Several Mena Bearcats are among the statistical leaders this season according to Max Preps. Austin Rose is 3rd in the state in passing. Rose has completed almost 70% of his passes for 558 yards in the first two games. Caleb Peters is 7th in the state n receiving. Peters has 14 catches for 203 yards thru two games. Jarrett Burger is 13th in the state in tackles. Burger has a total of 21 tackles in the first two games. Thursday, September 9, 2021 Clubs & Activities: Thursday - a college rep from the Southern Arkansas University (SAU) is in Room 403 today during enrichment for any senior who is not in Mrs. Purvis’ JAG classes; Quiz Bowl Practice will be on Wednesdays and Thursdays at high school. Friday - FBLA meeting in Room 401 - Bring money for District Conference if you are wanting to attend. Sports: Thursday - Jr. High Football will play @ Clarksville MHS Golf will play at Malvern, Volleyball @ Camden Jr. JV, Jr. V, Sr. V Friday - Sr. Football @ Hot Springs The early bird registration deadline for FBLA district conference is this Friday (earlier than previously announced). If you want to wear the new District FBLA t-shirt to the conference and not business attire, please bring your registration money to the meeting tomorrow. The FBLA meeting will be in Room 401. To be able to attend the district conference, you must also be a current FBLA member. There is a QR code outside Room 202 to sign up using a Google Form and the $20 dues can be given to Mrs. Torix at any time. Students, please be aware that once you enter the gate for home football and volleyball games, you are not allowed to leave or go to the parking lot and come back into the facility. Once you leave the gate, you are making the decision to leave the ball game for the night, and you cannot pay to re-enter either. We are forming a chess club. There is a google classroom that students can join. We are still in the planning stages. Please see Ms. Smith in room 104 for more information. Students, you can purchase your homecoming dance tickets with Mrs. Ashcraft. Tickets are $10 each. The dance will be Saturday evening, September 25, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. This year we are happy to announce we are able to provide you with after school library hours and tutoring. The schedule for this is: Monday: Mrs. Hooker 3:30 to 7 pm Tuesday: Mrs. Hoyle or Ms. Catlett 3:30 to 7 pm Wednesday: Ms. Ashcraft 3:30 to 6 pm Thursday: Mrs. Hoyle or Ms. Catlett 3:30 to 7 pm Saturday: Mrs. Hoyle or Ms. Catlett 9:00 to 12:00 This is time that you can use to study, gather for a group meeting, use our new makerspace, or get help with assignments. If you sign up for it before the end of school, snacks will be provided. Saturday tutoring must be signed up for by Friday, the google form can be found in your “Class Of…” Google Classroom. Math tutoring will be each morning from 7:15-8:00, and each Monday- Wednesday after school until 4:15. Ms. Hendrix will be tutoring after school on Thursdays until 5:15. If you would like to be in the school play, The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood, come by Ms. Kropp’s room 201 and pick up an audition paper. The play is open to all MHS students. Auditions will be tomorrow from 4-6 in the MHS PAC. Anyone who would like to join FCCLA please see Mrs. Wilson or Mrs. Hobson. Dues are $15 and can be paid anytime this month. If you are interested in joining the art club this year, our first meeting will be this Friday, September 10th! Come to the art room during Enrichment to learn more about the club and all the fun things we have planned for this year! Our first meeting isn’t until October 8th so this is the best way to get club information before the first meeting. There will be a meeting this Friday, September 10, in the Ag Building during Enrichment, this will be the first meeting of the year and it is encouraged for new members or interested students to attend. Dues are $17 and are encouraged to be paid as soon as possible. Students, as we work toward keeping everyone healthy and safe here at Mena High School, please do not come to school with Flu like or COVID-like symptoms. -Positive COVID cases will have to ISOLATE for 10 days before returning to school -IF you wear a mask correctly and have been identified as a Close Contact, you will not have to quarantine. -If not wearing a mask, and you have been identified as a Close Contact, you will have to be quarantined for 7-10 days if you have NOT been vaccinated. Students, you have the opportunity to be the teacher each Friday during Lunch A and Lunch B. Ms. Labertew will be set up in the cafeteria each Friday during lunch, ready for you to teach her a new skill or a trick. Once you show her how it’s done, she will attempt to perform it as well. Whether it’s juggling, roping, a card trick, or even dance moves, Ms. Labertew is ready for you to teach her something new. Look for her in the cafeteria each Friday during lunch for the “Teach Me How To…” events. Seniors Pictures retakes and make-up picture day will be next Monday, September 13. For any seniors who did not get their pictures taken in July, we will need to get your pictures done on September 13, even if you don’t plan to purchase any of the photos. These photos are needed for the yearbook, as well as other school related purposes throughout the school year. See Mr. Philpot in room 205 for more information. If you plan to get retakes next Monday, please notify Mr. Philpot by tomorrow. Mena Sr. Volleyball played Malvern at the Union Bank Center on Tuesday. The score was 25-21, 25-23 & 25-5. The Ladycats improve to 4-0 & will plat at Camden Fairview on Thursday.

Mena Coaches select #33, Jayden Felix, as the Farm Bureau Insurance Player of the Week vs. Clarksville. Jayden is a Junior running back / linebacker for the Bearcats. He had 1 receiving touchdown and 1 rushing touchdown with over 100 all- purpose yards on offense and 2 tackles for loss, defensively. His efforts helped lead the Bearcats to a comfortable 38-14 victory over the Panthers. Mena’s off to a great start, at 2-0 for the year! Jayden is the son of Walter and Misty Felix and is one of eight children, having 2 brothers and 5 sisters. His hobbies are primarily football, off season conditioning, and X-Box games. After graduation, Jayden hopes to continue to play football at the college level, as he pursues a degree in Accounting. This week, Mena will travel to Hot Springs to take on the Hot Springs High Trojans, who currently stand at 1-1 for the season. Mena lost a close game to the Trojans last year and Jayden and the Bearcats will be up for a little payback come Friday night. Tuesday, September 7th Mena Cross Country will compete in their first meet of the season at the Tom Stuthard Stampede in Acorn starting at 3:30pm. Jr. & Sr. Volleyball will host Malvern at the Union Bank Center beginning at 4:00pm.

MHS/MMS Choir Teacher Lana Coogan & MMS Principal Todd Coogan educated her students in the art of vocal performance with guitar accompaniment on Friday.
