Announcements for Monday, November 18th Reminders: 8th grade ETS will meet today after these announcements. 6th grade ETS will meet on Wednesday. Picture retakes are Wednesday morning. We will attend the Senior Play Wednesday. The cost is $2. The Thanksgiving meal will be served in our cafeteria Wednesday. BADD members who are attending today’s movie will meet in the Library right after school today. The lost and found box is overflowing with coats, books, lunch boxes. Everything in it will be bagged up later this week and taken to PCDC. Announcements for Friday, November 15th Congratulations to the MMS 7th grade Quiz Bowl team – out of 11 schools that competed, they won 1st place. Reminders: 8th grade ETS will meet on Monday during ACHIEVE. Picture retakes are next Wednesday. We will attend the Senior Play next Wednesday. You can pay your $2 to your 1st period teacher beginning Monday. The Thanksgiving meal will be served in our cafeteria next Wednesday. Mid-term progress reports will be available in your ACHIEVE class today. Today is the deadline for BADD members to turn in their money and permission slips to Mrs. Rose for Monday’s Smoke Screen movie. The lost and found box is overflowing with coats, books, lunch boxes. The 7th grade quiz bowl team took 1st place at the Ashdown Invitational quiz bowl on  November 14. There were 11 teams. Mena won all of the games they participated in. Seated are Reagan Gates, Isabel Vacca, Greyson Kremers, Elijah Smith, and Dorian Knight. Standing are  Destiny Hogan, Karley Sharp, Abi Koppein, Scottie Gragg, and Izzy Henry.

In honor of World Kindness Day and Mr Rogers MHS Counselor Tonya Thacker and MMS Counselor Leilani Rose rocked the red cardigans Wednesday!

The Mena High School Theatre Department will present their public performances of "The Yellow Boat" this Saturday & Sunday at the Performing Arts Center.... We will see you there!

Mena eighth grade GT students participated in the Ashdown Invitational Quiz Bowl on Nov. 13. There were 11 teams. They faced Dierks, Nashville , and Prescott before lunch and were seeded number 6 after lunch. The team played Prescott after lunch and played a close game, with Prescott winning by only 20 points. I'm so proud of the effort they put in!

Announcements for Wednesday, November 12th Reminders: Parent/Teacher Conferences are tonight from 3:30 – 6:30, in the MMS Cafeteria. Mid-Term Progress Reports will be handed out. Next Monday is the after school Smoke Screen movie for the members of BADD. The sign-up sheet for ID cards is on the podium at the front office. The first card is free. If this is your second card this year, it will cost $3. The Thanksgiving Meal will be served in our Cafeteria one week from today. For $18 you can still order an EAST T-Shirt. Orders are due Friday. Make checks out to Mena EAST. 7th grade GT students going to Ashdown need to be in the MMS Cafeteria tomorrow morning before 7:00 a.m. Also, you need to bring a lunch, along with your signed permission slip. Be sure and get the classwork you will miss tomorrow. There are two events happening one week from today. Next Wednesday morning are picture retakes for those who want one. That afternoon, we will be going to the MHS Senior Play at the PAC. It will cost $2 per student. We will begin collecting your money next Monday. Lunchtime Weather: If you have appropriate winter clothing, you will have the option of going outside during lunch today. You do have the option of staying inside, if you want to. MMS Receives Math Award! Dear Principal Sherrer and Superintendent Weston, Congratulations! MENA MIDDLE has been recognized by the Office for Education Policy (OEP) at the University of Arkansas as a school that is Beating the Odds, because students demonstrated high growth on the ACT Aspire even though the school serves a high percentage of students who participate in Free and Reduced Lunch! As you may know, the OEP creates an annual report entitled the Outstanding Educational Performance Awards, recognizing schools with high student growth. We think growth is the best indicator of the positive impact that your school is having on students. In our Beating the Odds report to be released tomorrow, MENA MIDDLE received the following award: "Beating the Odds" High Math Growth: Middle Level (Southwest Region) We provide badges for placement on your school’s website (attached), and a personalized paper award will be sent to the district later this school year. Awards are based on the 2019 content growth score calculated by the Arkansas Department of Education. These growth scores reflect how much students at the school improved from 2018 compared to how much they were expected to grow considering prior achievement. We recognize schools based on Overall growth, as well as for growth in Math and English Language Arts separately. On that day, students will be able to wear their favorite cap or hat to school for $1 donation. You will also be able to purchase a cup of hot chocolate at lunch on Friday for $1.00. The $1 donation for wearing the hat will be turned in to your 1st period teacher on Friday. Also, right after these announcements, Mrs. Sikes needs to see Caroline Cannon, Hailey Emerson, Makayla Vega, Elaina Aleshire and Jocelyn Hernandez. Students, just a reminder that anytime you have to “buzz in” at either of our security entrances, please stay in front of the camera so that our office staff can identify you. The Veterans’ Thank You Card will be available for you to sign in the cafeteria for the next couple of days. Picture Re-Takes will take place on Wednesday, November 20th. These pictures are voluntary. Forms will be available in your ACHIEVE class on Monday. The following groups will be meeting right after today’s announcements: FBLA in Mrs. Sikes’ room. BADD Club in the gym for a group photo. Mrs. Smith needs to see anyone helping with the Veterans’ Day Luncheon. If the weather permits, we will all be going out to the bus loop on Monday to show our support as the Veterans’ Parade goes by. Lunchtime Weather: The current temperature is ____, so we will be going outside at lunch today. Several of you are still coming to school in shorts and / or no coat or jacket. As we’ve told you before, we will still go outside at lunch, even on cold days unless we determine that it is just too cold. If you need a coat or jacket, there are plenty in the lost & found box. Announcements for Tuesday, November 5th Reminders: The BADD Club will have a group photo taken on Friday. Parent / Teacher Mid-Term Conferences are one week from tomorrow. Students in Lunch “B” – There were 3 cafeteria trays, 2 styrofoam trays, and some trash left outside yesterday around the benches. Thanks to a few kind students who picked them up, you only get a reminder today. The next time this is an issue, all phone / personal device use will be prohibited at lunch for an indefinite period of time. Several of you have noticed that on these sunny days, the bees and yellow jackets are present outside. Leave them alone and they will leave you alone.
