Mrs. Singleton;s AP Lit students at Mena High School are wrapping up with Tom Foster's How to Read Lit Like a Professor. The author's argument is that all literature is somehow related, and therefore there is no wholly unique piece of literature. Today we did an experiment to see if his claim is true or false. Students each made a list of 6 pieces of literature with which they are familiar. They grouped them into a chain and explained how each was related. We then connected each table group of six and then the whole class. We were able to relate everything into a giant giraffe shaped web, and the students decided Foster is justified in his thinking. The attached photo is a picture of our results with everything from Taylor Swift songs to classic literature to tv shows. This is always the kids' favorite AP Lit lesson because it proves that our brains categorize everything we read, meaning the more we read, the more we know!
